History

The Department of Environmental Engineering is an academic unit under the Faculty of Engineering at Diponegoro University. It was officially established in 1998 and began accepting its first students in the 1999 academic year. Since its inception, the Department of Environmental Engineering has been committed to contributing to the development of education, research, and community service in the field of environmental engineering.

As stated in its founding vision,

“This department was established to address the need for reliable and professional environmental engineering experts who can play an active role in addressing environmental issues in line with population growth, increasing public awareness of a healthy environment, the challenges of global climate change, and efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”

In delivering its educational programs, the Department of Environmental Engineering implements a carefully designed and sustainable curriculum. This curriculum emphasizes a balance between academic mastery and character development, with the aim of producing graduates who are well-educated, skilled, and possess a broad perspective. The learning process is designed to foster critical, creative, and innovative thinking, enabling graduates to act professionally and adapt to advancements in science and technology.

The Department of Environmental Engineering equips students with technical competencies in various key fields, including potable water treatment, wastewater treatment, solid waste management, air pollution control, and environmental sanitation through an engineering approach. In addition to these core competencies, students are also equipped with supporting knowledge covering occupational health and safety, project management, communication skills, and the development of an entrepreneurial spirit to prepare them for the professional world.

As part of a holistic educational approach, the Department of Environmental Engineering also encourages students to develop their interests and talents in the fields of religion, the arts, culture, and sports. Students gain organizational and leadership experience through the Environmental Engineering Student Association (HMTL), which serves as a platform for developing soft skills, teamwork, and social responsibility. Through this approach, the Department of Environmental Engineering at Diponegoro University strives to produce graduates who excel academically, possess strong character, and are ready to contribute to sustainable environmental development.
