UNDIP Appoints International Adjunct Professor to Strengthen Environmental Engineering Research

In support of Undip’s goal to become a World-Class Research University, the Department of Environmental Engineering and the Center of Excellence for Membrane Science and Technology at Diponegoro University, led by Dr. Titik Istirokhatun, ST, MSc, Ph.D, IPU, organized an event featuring an Adjunct Professor from the New Zealand Institute for Bioeconomy Science titled “Improving Research and Publication Quality in Water Treatment.” The event took place from September 5 to 14, 2025, featuring Professor Ralph Rolly Gonzales, a research-oriented academic in Environmental Engineering with a strong interdisciplinary research background in chemistry and applied environmental science. His research projects focus on sustainable water treatment, resource recovery, and bioenergy. In addition, Prof. Gonzales is also strongly committed to the classroom learning process.

The Adjunct Professor program consists of public lectures for undergraduate and graduate students in Environmental Engineering, followed by manuscript clinics and guidance on scientific article writing for undergraduate and graduate students in Environmental Engineering and young researchers at the Center of Excellence for Membrane Science and Technology.

During this workshop on writing scientific articles, Prof. Gonzales helped students and young researchers draft scientific articles that meet established standards, provided examples of how to write effective abstracts, craft engaging introductions, present results, and conduct in-depth discussions, providing guidance on journal submission, strategies for getting published in reputable journals, managing revisions, and communicating with editors.

The Program Coordinator for this adjunct professor program, Ir. Titik Istirokhatun, ST, MSc, Ph.D, IPU, stated: “A public lecture featuring a professor from abroad with a strong academic reputation is a golden opportunity for students to gain knowledge, broaden their horizons, and expand their professional network. Additionally, the mentoring sessions for writing scientific articles, led by a researcher with a high reputation, are highly valuable as they enhance students’ analytical skills, critical thinking, synthesis, and the systematic presentation of ideas.”
